Lessons from the Summit: My Mountain Running Journey
It's been nearly a week since I crossed the finish line of the Snowdonia Trail Half marathon, and my body is still feeling the aftermath. My calves are sore, and my quads protest every time I rise from a chair.
As I sit here at my laptop, jotting down notes for this episode, I can't help but reflect on the valuable insights I gained from this mountain run. Lessons that can be applied to all of our running journeys.

I was away for a family break in Wales and I was planning my usual Sunday morning route, thinking I could possibly explore the Snowdonia region. I've climbed Snowdon once before but walking. I fancied running it as a challenge.
Coincidentally there just so happened to be an event on that weekend. So I booked a place on the Tuesday and ran it on the Sunday. Not the greatest prep I know but I am running around half marathon distance in my weekend long runs so it wasn't like I wasn't able to run the distance.
SNOWDON
Standing proudly in the Snowdonia National Park in Wales, Snowdon is a majestic peak that attracts adventurers and nature enthusiasts from around the world. Here are some fascinating facts about Snowdon:
Height and Range: Snowdon, reaches a height of 1,085 meters (3,560 feet) above sea level. It is the highest peak in Wales and one of the tallest mountains in the British Isles.
Geological Significance: Snowdon is a part of the Snowdon Volcanic Group and is composed of ancient volcanic rocks. Its distinctive and rugged appearance is a testament to the geological forces that shaped the region millions of years ago.
Rich Mythology and History: Snowdon has a rich mythology and historical significance. According to Welsh folklore, it is believed to be the burial place of the giant Rhitta Gawr. Throughout history, the mountain has been a source of inspiration for artists, poets, and writers.
Accessible for Adventurers: Snowdon offers multiple trails and routes to cater to a wide range of hikers and climbers, from beginners to experienced mountaineers. The popular routes include the Llanberis Path, Pyg Track, and Miner's Track, each offering stunning views and unique challenges.
Breathtaking Panoramic Views: Reaching the summit of Snowdon rewards you with awe-inspiring panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including glacial valleys, shimmering lakes, and the dramatic coastline. On a clear day, you can even see as far as Ireland, England, and Scotland.
The Snowdonia area is a stunning area and well worth visiting if you haven’t.

Embrace the Uphill Battle: Running a mountain teaches you the importance of embracing challenges and persevering through steep inclines. It's a reminder that uphill battles can lead to incredible rewards and personal growth.
I reached the summit and barely had time to take it in before I headed off back down the other side but on reflection that incredibly brutal uphill or up-mountain to more accurately describe it. Was a lesson in perserverence. I can do it by simply focusing on one foot in front of the other. I knew it was making me more resilient mentally and physically.
Mind Over Matter: Running a mountain requires mental strength. It teaches you to push past the constant nagging self-doubt telling you to stop. I was able to embrace discomfort and tap into your inner strength.
Your mindset plays a crucial role in conquering the physical demands of the climb. You are much stronger than you give yourself credit for and you only find that out by challenging yourself. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. That’s where growth is. You will become even stronger. So book that challenge today!
Respect Nature's Power: Running in the mountains highlights the awe-inspiring power of nature. It reminds you to respect and appreciate the environment, as weather conditions and terrain can change rapidly. Adapting to these conditions helps you become a more resilient and adaptable runner.
As we got closer to the summit the temperature dropped dramatically and the winds increased hugely. At several points my running cap was blown off. Smile at the power of nature. If you let the negative grow and you resist its power you will cause yourself more suffering and wasted energy.
At some points up the mountain when the winds got really severe I was laughing to myself. Laughing because there was nothing else I could do. It was like nature was showing me who is boss and I respected it’s power.
Patience and Pacing: Mountain running emphasises the importance of patience and pacing yourself. Uphills may require a slower pace, conserving energy for the long haul. Power walk when you need to. I saw several runners go out way too fast early on and they completely emptied their tanks before the end of the race.
Repeat your running form mantras. Check your body. Check how you’re breathing. Be in your body and be patient. Try to maintain good form to limit the amount of wasted energy.
One guy in particular came hurtling past me on the downhill. I could hear his heavy footsteps from a long way back. I was cringing at the impact he must have been putting through his body. I past him in the last mile as he had pulled to the side and was holding his knee, which was no surprise.
It's crucial to find a sustainable rhythm to maintain throughout the climb and descent.
Find Joy in the Journey: Running a mountain allows you to connect with nature on a deeper level. Take the time to appreciate the breathtaking views, the serenity of the surroundings, and the sheer joy of challenging yourself physically and mentally. Enjoy the journey, not just the destination.
Talk to other runners. Ask them the time. Ask them how they are doing, where they have come from etc? Connect with the other like minded people that have all come out to do the same run. you are on this journey together.
